A very special story I'd like to share.
From RL's 18.

The Rich Poor Man

Charlie Chan was a young immigrant from China who toiled hard and saved as much as he could. He invested his money carefully and, over time, grew to be rich.

Despite his newfound wealth, Charlie was content with the simple life. Home was a one-room apartment in Chinatown. He never felt the need to move from his humble surrounds. After work, he returned home to watch TV to unwind before falling asleep.

When he reached his seventies, Charlie's body showed signs of slowing and he was forced his own mortality. A regular churchgoer, he spent time praying and thinking of all the good he could have done.

One night, an angel appeared to him.

"God has heard your prayers and will grant you three wishes"," said the angel, adding that each wish came with a price. "The more you ask, the higher the price."

Charlie thanked God for answering his prayers and proceeded with his first wish. "I want the poor in Chinatown to have enough food, clothing and shelter."

The angel smiled. "It'll lost you all your wealth," he said. Charlie's heart skipped a beat. The money was his life savings but decided it would be useless when he was dead.

His wish was granted and when he checked his POSB account, all he had left was $200. But all around Chinatown, he saw smiling faces and happy children.

Charlie knew what he wanted next. He had been in and out of Singapore General Hospital of late. "Heal the sick in the hospital I go to."

"The price," said the angel, "is your own health."

"Oh dear," he said, flinching.

He was getting on, he reasoned, and even if he could live longer, it really would mean more pain. He thought of patients in SGH and agreed to pay the price.

The patients recovered, surprising doctors and patients alike. But pain wracked every fibre of Charlie's shrivelled body.

His enthusiasm for wishes waned and he prayed for patience instead. In church, his pastor spoke of a six-year-old girl, a violin prodigy. She was suffering from leukaemia. Her parents, the owners of a struggling independent bookstore, happened to be seated in front of Charlie. They held each other, sobbing.

"I wish for her recovery," prayed Charlie.

"That'll mean you'll die before the year ends," said the angel, sighing.

Despite his suffering, Charlie yearned for life. Every morning brought with it a hope that life would turn for the better and that the angel would grant him all his desires of his heart. A teary Charlie agreed to the price and the child made a miraculous recovery.

As Christmas Eve descended on Singapore, carols could be heard and there was merry-making all across the land. Charlie lay on his bed, his life ebbing away. He was alone, in pain and his heart was about to break.

In church, worshippers were shaking hands with one another at the stroke of midnight when the grand chandelier, which hung proudly in the sanctuary, fell inexplicably, shattering into a million pieces. At the same moment, Charlie gave up the ghost.

They found him on his bed the next day; a small Christmas tree with flickering lights in a corner.

Meanwhile, God looked down from heaven and spied a soul so beautiful that he wanted in heaven with himself. The angel visited Charlie one last time and gently lifted his soul.

"There's a wish I have go grant," said the angel to Charlie.

"But... but..." muttered Charlie.

"It's not your wish but God's," said the angel. "And God wants you to be with him forever and ever."

It's the first time I'm clubbing at the same location as you, and this is what I get. Well done, very well done.

We're over. I've no reason to flare up that night. I didn't think I was going to. Upon witnessin all these nonsense, I can't help but to. He hold me you're his cousin and why would he get involved with you. Yes, I believed that. Next, you tell me he's your cousin, and I'm convinced. And then Gary told me that's his cousin. I am devastated. You bet I'm. You lied to me. I don't know how many times you had lied and what about. I don't wanna know.

And then you asked me, are we over? Fuck yes, it's over. I know alot about you. Things you don't say but I knew... all along I knew. I thought you'd change, but you certainly did not. I wanted to prove em wrong. But I failed to, I failed to miserably. I thought we were meant to be. The green hat I'm wearing now is certainly not trendy this humiliation is absurd. What did I do to deserve this.

I wouldn't say I'm a perfect boyfriend. I wouldn't say I'm at no fault of this break up. I'm sorry we tried so hard to keep us going when we're actually going nowhere.
We should have given it up from the very first time you wanted to leave. Yeah, I'm ought to be sorry.

The last straw was that night. That fateful night, you wanted to leave. You left, and you held another guy's hand just two hours later. You know what, FUCK YOU, fuck the shit out of you if you're gonna tell me you're drunk when you haven't even started drinking shit. No excuses, lady. You blew it, that's it. These are my final words.

Five lessons on the way we should treat people:

1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.
During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:

'What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?'
Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50 ' s, but how would I know her name?

I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

'Absolutely, ' said the professor. 'In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say 'hello.! '

I've never forgotten that lesson. And I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. - Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain
One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride! Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960 ' s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man ' s door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached.

It read:
'Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along.
Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband ' s bedside just before he passed away... God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.'

3 - Third Important Lesson - Always remember those
who serve.
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

'How much is an ice cream sundae?' he asked.
'Fifty cents,' replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.

'Well! how much is a plain dish of ice cream?' he inquired.

By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.

' Thirty-five cents,' she brusquely replied.

The little boy again counted his coins.

'I ' ll have the plain ice cream,' he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to tear as she wiped the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies..

You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 - Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in our path.
In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walk ed around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the
person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us wil never understand!

This shows that every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5 - Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...
Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, 'Yes I'll do it if it will save her.' As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, 'Will I start to die right away?'

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her, but he still did. Give while it counts.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

His bed was next to the room's only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.

Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.

It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.'

Epilogue:

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.

Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.

If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

'Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present.'

The origin of this letter is unknown, but it brings good luck to everyone who passes it on.

It's been some time since we actually all sat down and laughed our asses off.

Jaron, I miss you so much, I hope you're safe, and I hope you're not too devastated. Fret not, yo man here, ain't goin no where, I`ll be here, I`ll celebrate you home.

PS:Alfred, take care of yourself while working, don't work too hard just for the sake of money, call me when you have time. We need some real catching up to do.

Friday:
met alex, roy and xuan for a movie at orchard. joel and friends came over later in the night. his skinny friend, whose name i've forgotten is so so funny! we watched mirrors, the sound effects is brilliant. the plot is interesting, overall the movie is good.. 3.5 stars for me i guess. chilled awhile after and cabbed home with xuan and alex.

Saturday:
the whole day was a "parkway day". damn its really lucky for denz, cause he went back early. i actually tricked him saying we would go catch a movie after. hehehe, mm, not much for the evening. late night was boring, but meaningful. roy, weikiat, alex and me sat at macs. alex and i had a man to man talk. its good, talked about life. damn i love his presence. mm, i dont remember the actual story and whose it from but... i think sex on the beach is awfully exciting, damn anyone up for it? GOOD GRACIOUS!!! HAHAHAHAHA.

Sunday:
met up with wesley and fay at parkway. wesley had this mini competition at the f1 thingy at parkway, but poor boy said he was unlucky so he lost. soon after, wesley and i played pool while fay watched us from the side. wesley, im so sorry but im the winner of the race to 5 today. :) not everyday is a sunday you know, wesley? hehehe, in case you dont know, wesley trashed me 5-1 yesterday night. damn, i was pissed. sweet sweet revenge. had dinner afterwards at east coast. our favourite kangkong was there. as usual, wesley was bullied by me.. i ate 3/4 of it. heheheh, im such an ass-wipe. im always bullying my friends.

PS: You guys know that I`m such a nice guy, and I don't do shits intentionally. :P
